AN Inverness golf club is planning on pulling in the punters by opening a brand new sports bar.

Fairways Leisure Group has applied for permission to convert a locker room into a bar, toilets and kitchen

The locker room is being decommissioned after the closure of an 18-hole golf course earlier this year.

Fairways, which is on Sir Walter Scott Drive, has asked Highland Council for planning permission for a change of use. It also wants to establish a hot food takeaway and to extend the cellar.

Mike Sheffield, speaking on behalf of property management company Amity, which manages the course, said: “Fairways is great, clean and modern. We still have a long way to go, but the early indications coming out of lockdown are that we are doing well.

“The owners are planning to invest and this planning application will create more opportunities for people to use the golf course and club for a range of activities.

“We are planning a sports bar experience that will be somewhere that people will want to spend time – whether it is watching a big match or meeting friends.

“The nine-hole golf course, since the closure of the 18-hole course, has become very popular and we are pleased with the numbers of people who are using it. We are hoping to build on this.

“The golf range is being well used. People can self isolate very well at the range and that has been an added bonus of all the refurbishment work that went on prior to the lockdown.”

He continued: “The government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme worked very well for us, and it gave our customers the confidence to get back out.

“Our restaurant continues to grow, and we have a stream of regular customers as well as visitors. We are grateful for their support.” The application will be considered by the council’s planning department.
