A GAS firm was forced to abandon works to replace pipes under the A96 in Nairn after traffic drew to a standstill.
SGN is investing £130,000 to replace metal gas mains with a modern polyethylene pipe but has paused the work after a new set of temporary traffic lights caused severe disruption in the town.
Spokeswoman Hannah Adam said the company decided to remove the traffic lights last night after numerous complaints. She said: “We will complete this work at a later date and provide a further update once revised plans have been finalised.”
Nairn councillor Michael Green had been anticipating traffic snarl-ups but not to such an extent.
“I never thought it would be as bad as this,” he admitted. “The back roads must have been heaving.”
Nairn community councillor Rosemary Young was caught up in the traffic jam. “It’s an absolute standstill,” she said. “I have never seen anything like this. They’ve put this town in shambles.”
Work was due to be carried out in Harbour Street, High Street, Bridge Street and the St Ninian Road junction of the A96.
