Inverness home cook Sarah Rankin used her love for game to take another step towards MasterChef fame last night (Tues).

It was the first of the semi-final rounds on the hit BBC cooking show.

And marketing consultant Sarah (47) kept true to her Scottish roots with her contribution to a high pressured restaurant sitting of 20 former MasterChef contestants.

Judge John Torode was running the pass while the remaining ten competitors were split up to offer up a starter, main course and dessert.

Sarah, a mother of two who now lives in Kinross with her husband, chose pigeon as her main – with four of the 20 diners opting for her main course.

John Torode told fellow judge Gregg Wallace at the start of the service: “If it's not good enough it will not be going into the dining room.”

While Sarah prepared her dish she said: “Everything is going to have to be perfect.”

And it was a change of outfit this week too, with the remaining 10 swapping their fought after aprons for chefs whites.

Sarah: “I think when it first started my main goal was if I get an apron, I'll be happy.

“And then when I got an apron, I thought 'well I want to carry on'.

“And now that I'm here and I've got these [whites] on I want to be in the final.”

For her guests Sarah, born and raised in Inverness, served up roast pigeon with a Marsala sauce,a black pudding crumb on a celeriac fondant, beetroot crisps, Brussels sprouts and a bramble gel.

She described it to the judges as “a slightly posher Sunday lunch for us”.

Sarah previously told the Inverness Courier how much she loves serving game to her family.

On her cookery style, she said: “You know I care about feeding people.

“I don't want to show, oh I've got 12 technical skills but the plate of food isn't something anybody wants to eat.

“I just want to make something that is lovely.”

Sarah progresses through to the next kitchen challenge on BBC One tomorrow night (Thurs) with seven others who avoided elimination.
