A charity fund established in memory of a leading businessman’s daughter has made its first donation.

Jennifer’s Fund was set up by windows manufacturer Cairngorm Group in memory of Jennifer McBurnie who died last year. She was the daughter of chairman David Dowling and sister of managing directors Chris and Scott Dowling.

They recently presented £1000 to Connecting Young Carers which will give treats to young people who shoulder the burden of caring responsibilities.

Roisin Connolly, chief executive of Connecting Carers, the parent group of Connecting Young Carers, said: “It’s an honour to be the first recipient of a Jennifer’s Fund donation, and we’ll use the money to stage more activities and respite opportunities for young carers during the October school holidays to help take the pressure off them.

“In addition, we’ll be able to hold a Christmas celebration and invite young carers from our whole area.

“This is a wonderful gesture by Cairngorm which will be greatly appreciated.

“Young carers have a challenging time looking after family members and it’s critical that we give them the time to be children.

“We have a five-year-old member in Inverness – and, believe it or not, we have a four-year-old ready to join.

“We’re running a summer series of activities to give young carers some fun. It’s important that they realise people recognise what they’re doing and that they have the opportunity to mix with other young carers.”

Chris Dowling added: “Young carers perform a magnificent, often overlooked, role in our community. They give sterling support to parents, siblings or other family members unable to care for themselves. Cairngorm are delighted to be able to help bring them enjoyment, building on the fine work of Connecting Carers.

“I’m sure Jennifer would have approved.”
