People with dementia and their families are to benefit from a new initiative by Inverness-based Partnerships for Wellbeing (P4W).

The organisation has been awarded funding of £34,000 by the Life Changes Trust to deliver a health walks project.

P4W works to create and sustain healthy communities across the Highlands by delivering health walks and the funding will make them accessible to people affected by dementia.

A launch event will be held at Merkinch Community Centre in Inverness today, with Alzheimer Scotland explaining the dementia-related benefits of being outdoors.

P4W manager Robert Locke said: “We are thrilled to have received such generous funding and to be able to support people with dementia and their carers into our P4W health walks.

“Health walking is a great way to get active and take care of our own physical health, but it also has many other benefits, not least the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and make new friends – we are really looking forward to meeting new walkers through this project.”

Arlene Crockett, director of evidence and influencing for the Life Changes Trust dementia programme, said: “A diagnosis of dementia can lead to social exclusion and isolation, but dementia-friendly communities can help prevent this.

“Partnerships for Wellbeing has already had great success with its health walks across Highland, and this funding will support them to make a significant difference to the lives of people affected by dementia.”
