Friends of an Inverness-shire family stuck in Spain have made a desperate plea for help.

Gemma Chapman is desperate to get help for her friend Aislinn Mackay and her mum and dad, John and Louisa Ferguson, after her father had a heart attack.

Spain is currently in lock down due to the coronavirus, and flights out of the country have become limited.

Ms Chapman said: "My friend and her elderly parents are currently stuck in Gran Canaria. The family went on holiday to Lanzarote a few weeks ago before the coronavirus emergency broke out."

Ms Mackay is an Inverness-based train conductor.

"During the holiday her dad took a seizure and was rushed to hospital. He is normally fit and well with no known health conditions.

"He was put into a medically induced coma and the hospital carried out tests which suspected a heart attack so he was flown over to a hospital in Gran Canaria.

"My friend and her elderly mother, who has previously suffered a stroke and who is on medication, flew to join him in Gran Canaria, during this time they have had to move to several different accommodation complexes."

Mr Ferguson was discharged on Wednesday.

Ms Chapman continued: "They have been told by the insurance company they will need to fly with a doctor because he is at risk of taking unwell at any time. The insurance company are doing what they can but because of the crisis they cannot source anything for them.

"Now the situation as it stands is that from Tuesday they are to vacate their accommodation because of the lock down and they are going to be left with nowhere to stay and she is struggling to look after her dad who needs to be in a hospital back home."

Ms Chapman is asking for anyone who can help, who may have family in Spain or in Gran Canaria, to get in touch with her urgently.

She can be contacted via gemma-chapman@hotmail.com

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have been asked to comment.
