PARKING will be free in the Rose Street multi-storey car park in Inverness this weekend following disruption caused by this week's fire in nearby Academy Street.

Highland Council said it was making the move to help local businesses and shoppers hit by the partial closure of Academy Street.

The authority said all businesses unaffected by the fire were open and trading as normal, despite a cordon remaining in place around the gutted shop which housed M&Co and R D Hair and Beauty.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of the difficulties people have driving around the city centre at the moment so thought making the car park at Rose Street free for users over the weekend would benefit local businesses and people wanting to spend time in the city centre.”

A small section of Academy Street outside M&Co is expected to remain closed to traffic over the weekend as the fire-ravaged building is still too unsafe to erect scaffolding.

The council said these controls will be reviewed next week and asked drivers to be aware of the restrictions and read the signs that have gone up around the city.
