A famous Inverness culinary institution has announced it is offering free meals for kids throughout the winter.

In a bid to help families who are struggling with the increasing cost of living, JP at the Castle has pledged that children can eat for free when accompanied by a paying adult.

The Castle Street restaurant was taken over by Jane Macphee, founder of the successful Jammy Piece brand, in 2020.

She also runs a popular café by the canal at Muirtown

Portree-born and raised in Inverness, Mrs Macphee says she is passionate about her hometown and believes that JP at the Castle can be an important part of the community, offering a welcoming and warm space for local people.

She explained: “Lots of people are facing a very challenging winter. The rising cost of living is making it difficult for families as well as older or more vulnerable members of the local community.

“I’d like people to know that the team at JP at the Castle is there to offer a warm welcome. If an adult comes in with a child and pays for a meal, then that child can eat for free.

“Equally, if you just want to come in out of the cold and have a hot drink and some good company, that’s fine too.

“This building has been here since 1775 and it is a firm fixture of Inverness.

“I want to make sure that JP at the Castle is absolutely part of the community and is as relevant today as it ever was.”

Kids aged 16 and under can eat free with a paying adult between 12 noon and 5pm every day and can choose from haddock or chicken goujons and chips; burger and chips; macaroni cheese; or mince and tatties.

Mrs Macphee added: “Everything at JP at the Castle is homemade. We offer good, wholesome Scottish food served in a friendly atmosphere.”

This week also sees the launch of the eaterie’s Christmas menu where customers can choose from firm favourites like prawn cocktail, soup, brie wedges or pâté for a starter; roast turkey, roast beef or vegetable tart for a main course; and Christmas pudding, sticky toffee pudding or cheesecake for dessert.

A three-course meal costs £22.99, and a comprehensive vegan menu is also provided.

Mrs Macphee says she has lots of plans for 2023 and will start the New Year by offering a takeaway service with Deliveroo on New Year’s Day.

Customers will be able to order everything from breakfast to the traditional New Year’s Day steak pie and other hearty options from 7am through until 7pm.
