A young entrepreneur has just sealed a deal – with her mum – to expand on her first business venture.

Georgie Mackay (10), a pupil at Avoch Primary School, set up Georgie’s Candles during the coronavirus pandemic, and is now set to see her products go on sale at the Tweedy Pie shop in Fortrose, run by mum Julie.

She already knows there is a market for the product, as she had to draft her mum in as her first employee to help meet a rush of orders around Christmas and Valentine’s Day, when she was inundated with requests.

Some of the profits from the sales of Georgie’s Candles have helped boost funds for her primary school along with Fortrose Nursery and local charity Black Isle Cares.

“It was mum’s idea to start making the candles, and I went along with her at first,” she said, explaining how it all began.

“I am really involved in the decorating of the tins that have moved on from our first winter designs and into designs for the new season now. Our new candles are all going to be with a dolphin theme.

“The candles are going down very well.

“I make each candle in a small batch by heating the wax and then pouring it into each tin. My mum helps me with them.”

With her mum heating the wax after Georgie has chosen the exact scent she wants to produce, she added: “Firstly we had candy candles, meaning they had a smell of sweet scents.

“We are now working on flowery smells.”

And already thinking of how to further develop her offering she said: “We are also going to start making soaps with a great range of smells.”

Georgie’s Candles are available online via the Tweedy Pie Facebook page.
