Forestry and Land Scotland will begin a phased reopening of its car parks from Friday, July 3.

Forest car parks are set to reopen from Friday, July 3, but the public are being warned that some parking facilities and toilets will remain closed.

The message from Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is to check ahead as it begins a phased reopening of its parking areas.

It says the majority of car parks will be ready to welcome back visitors after the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, confirmed the five-mile travel limit for leisure was being lifted.

A full list of which facilities are open will be published on its website at forestryandland.gov.scot on Friday.

Simon Hodgson, CEO for FLS, said: “I’m really pleased that we can start a phased reopening of car parks and welcome more visitors to our forests and woodlands. We are not quite at the stage where we can reopen everything but we are getting there as quickly as we can.

“It has been a difficult time for everyone and this includes our staff. I would ask that all visitors are considerate with our staff – we are all in this together and learning a 'new normal'.

“We know that visitors are keen to use the car parks and this may result in some very busy periods. Please be prepared to adapt your plans and have an alternative location in mind in case your forest destination looks too busy.

“Please remember that although restrictions are easing, the virus is still there so follow the physical distancing guidance and stay safe, protect others and save lives.”

Walking trails have been open throughout the lockdown for local visitors but most mountain bike routes remain closed.

Forest car parks in Dumfries and Galloway will remain closed until at least July 10 as the five-mile travel limit remains in place there due to a localised Covid-19 outbreak.

FLS also reminded the public to take their litter home and be kind and considerate to all others using the forest after its staff had to spend time over the last week tidying up after anti-social behaviour. With toilets remaining closed, people are also asked to "go before they go".
