Footpaths in an Inverness green space will be temporarily closed from tomorrow as part of an ambitious project.

Access paths between Merkinch Local Nature Reserve and the Caledonian Canal will be closed to enable upgrading work on the paths to be carried out ahead of a broader project to revitalise the area.

It includes the development of the Carse Hub, a major waterside employment, community and outdoor venture beside the canal at Muirtown Basin plus enhanced access to surrounding commercial areas and the nature reserve.

The tow path on the north, or Merkinch, side of Muirtown Basin will be closed until December 19.

The sea wall path link between the nature reserve and railway crossing and canal will close until September 10.

A temporary diversion path between the Clachnaharry lock and the sea wall path link to the nature reserve will open on September 10.

Signs have been put in place and will be updated.

Reserve manager Caroline Snow urged people to be understanding.

"Ultimately, it is for the greater good," she said.

"It is something that a lot of us have been looking forward to for a long time."
