Major mop-up operation underway in and around Inverness with flooding causing havoc on rail and roads

Flooding continues to cause serious transport issues in and around Inverness with a major mop-up operation underway.

The Inverness Flood Alleviation Scheme floodgates were closed overnight amid concern at rising water levels in the River Ness, but were re-opened earlier this morning.

The city's Ness Islands have been closed to the public though, for safety reasons with exceptionally high water levels flooding parts of the walkway.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) updated live flooding information this morning with 10 flood alerts and 25 flood warnings, the majority in Inverness-shire and the central Highlands.

Both the Inverness to Drumnadrochit and the Drumnadrochit to Invermoriston stretches of the A82 remain closed due to debris and flooding, with diversions in place via Inverness, Kingussie and Spean Bridge.

The B9006 Sunnyside to Croy road remains closed due to flooding with Stagecoach forced to alter its bus routes.

Balloan Road in Inverness also remains closed after serious flooding, while the B852 Dores to Foyers road remains blocked after a landslip.

Road conditions have improved in and around Inverness after widespread flooding yesterday and the B9090 Clephanton to Cawdor has now re-opened, as has Diriebught Road in Inverness.

Drivers are being advised to approach these and other areas with caution and heed diversion signs.

A Highland Council spokeswoman said: "The road operatives are out on patrol this morning and we are updating our social media as the information is known to us."

All ScotRail services between Inverness and Wick, Kyle of Lochalsh and the Central Belt have been cancelled.

Replacement buses are in operation between Inverness and Perth, while trains are running between Inverness and Aberdeen at reduced speeds.

This morning’s Caledonian Sleeper service from London to Inverness was diverted via Aberdeen and expected to arrive later than usual.
