A fitness studio and a Highland charity will invite shoppers to support a cycling challenge in their first joint fundraising event tomorrow.

Inverness Fitness Studio is supporting the Elsie Normington Foundation which is developing Scotland’s first multi-purpose centre for young people with learning disabilities and complex needs.

The £4.1 million Haven Centre is currently taking shape at a site in Smithton and is set to open next year.

Inverness Fitness Studio, run by Drew Milne and Scott Murray, will be helping to raise funds and awareness of the project in the coming months.

It will have spin bikes at the Tesco Extra store at the Inverness Shopping Park tomorrow when a team will take on a cycling challenge.

The event will raise money for Haven supporter John Prendegast (18) who is undertaking the Tour de Afrique, a 8600km cycling challenge from Cairo to Cape Town.

Mr Murray said the studio in Seafield Road got involved in supporting the charity after member Kirstin Mackay – also the foundation’s programme manager – highlighted the plans for the centre.

“We have kept a donations box at reception for Inverness Fitness Studio users to donate their loose change,” he said.

“However, tomorrow we will have three bikes at Tesco Extra, where passers-by can donate towards our challenge of cycling from London to Inverness.

“We are also doing a charity spin in December as part of our members’ Christmas celebrations.”

Construction begins on pioneering £4.1m multi-purpose centre

Elsie Normington, chairwoman and founder of the foundation, was delighted with the Inverness Fitness Studio’s support.

“We are a small local charity but have big ambitions and will soon deliver the Haven Centre, Scotland’s first integrated play centre and respite facility for children and young adults with severe and complex needs and disabilities,” she said.
