First turf cut at new Inverness campus

WORK at the new Inverness College campus starts today with the first turf being cut by the Scottish cabinet’s finance secretary John Swinney.

The MSP has marked the start of infrastructure at Beechwood, joined by members of the region’s youth parliament.

The site will be used by the University of Highlands and Islands from 2015 and is being developed to include education and business by Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

It will also be used by the Centre for Health Science, the Scottish Agricultural College, Albyn Housing Society and the Calman Trust. There will also be community and sports facilities.

"Inverness Campus is an exciting and innovative project which will attract investment, jobs and education opportunities to the Highlands for decades to come," said Mr Swinney.

"I’m delighted to be here to mark the start of construction works, and particularly pleased to meet the young people involved in Highland Youth Voice.

"Youth employment is a priority issue for the Scottish Government. Projects like this provide our young people with new skills and opportunities to fulfil their potential and contribute to Scotland’s economic success and prosperity."

Late last year, HIE awarded a £12.3million contract to construction, infrastructure and design company Morgan Sindall to develop 100 acres of land at Beechwood as the first phase of the project
