The core of the band that was most recently known as Lucille, has already taken on a new identity as three-piece Iodynes – and they have their first single Know You’re Not Alone out this week. Jack Ledsham explains how their latest shapeshift came about.

Q You must have a sack of great names stashed somewhere, a previous guise of Lucille, then before that – Neon Knights. So why Iodynes, why now?

A Thank you very much, but I must say (re)naming a band is never easy! Every suggestion either sounds awful or is already taken! But we were determined to find a unique name that also felt right and I think we have achieved that!

Q Last time the band took on a change of name, I think becoming Lucille also meant a tweak of genres to ‘dark authentic powerpop’ – that was the way I think you put it at the time. Anything similar in an evolving sound now?

A Recent line-up changes have led to us reforming as a power-trio [Jack, Marc Davidson and Rikki Mackenzie]. The dynamic and the energy we have discovered as a three-piece is genuinely exciting. However, we felt that just as Neon Knights evolved into Lucille, it was time for the next chapter and for Lucille to evolve into something new and for it to be cast into a new identity.

Q How has the sound evolved?

A We will always try to keep things fresh and continue to tweak our style. The dark, anthemic tone of Lucille that we love is being preserved and brought forward into Iodynes, perhaps with a rockier edge and focus on driving riffs. C.

Q Checking back, I am reminded that you had a very busy 2022 with several great events for a band – a tour across Scotland and off to the IPO festival at the Cavern Club; you played a set on RAPAL; with single Rise out in April, heralding it all. Are you going to be raising the bar this year – quite a lot to live up to for 2023?!

A The second half of 2023 is going to be an exciting one for us. We will be working hard to build the Iodynes brand and bring our music to new places and people. We will be hitting the road as much as we can with a string of live dates to promote upcoming releases, all to be announced soon!

Q I think Know You’re Not Alone is the new single that arrived earlier this week, out on Monday, July 17. What can you tell us about it, how and when did you record it and what inspired you to decide this was the song to introduce Iodynes with?

A Know You’re Not Alone has been in the writing stages for a while now and it felt like the right song to introduce Iodynes to the rest of the world. The song is a powerful reminder that it’s okay not to be okay, with a strong message to seek help when you need it and realising the strength is in you all along. The song was home recorded to ensure that we had full creative control of the end result – everything in the single is how it sounds in our heads when we play it live and we’re excited to share this with everyone!

Q Plans for the rest of 2023?

A In November we will be playing at the Monsterfest Electric Night at the Tooth & Claw.

Q First, Belladrum! What a great place to introduce yourselves to a wide audience?

A Absolutely! Belladrum is going to be a fantastic day for us and what a way to start the Iodynes’ journey! Following Bella, we’re looking to keep up our momentum with single releases throughout the rest of the year. Keep an eye on our socials!
