A fire damaged Inverness primary school did not open this morning.

Firefighters were called to Balloch Primary after reports of smoke coming from a classroom were received about 11am yesterday.

Three appliances and the high level hydraulic platform unit were deployed and the blaze was under control by 11.45am.

It is understood a classroom suffered 10 per cent fire damage, but most of the damage to the building was caused by smoke, therefore pupils had an extra holiday until the place was repaired and cleaned up.

It is understood there were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the outbreak.

The school has a roll of 233 primary children and 55 at nursery.

Councillor Glynis Sinclair, Culloden and Ardersier, said it was perhaps fortunate that the school was closed for the weekend when the fire started.
