A FIRE and explosion at a house in Merkinch left one man with burns this morning.

Firefighters was scrambled to the house fire in Abban Street at 8.38am.

Three appliances from Inverness were sent to the scene and crews in breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish a small fire in a kitchen annexe off the property.

"It would appear there was a small explosion at the property, the cause of which will be investigated," said a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman. "A male occupant sustained burn injuries and was placed in the care of paramedics before being taken to hospital for treatment.

"The gas and electricity supplies to the property were isolated and Scottish Gas Networks are currently at the scene."

Police closed Lochalsh Road as a precaution following the explosion, the fire service's investigation unit has been requested to attend. The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
