A new driver was stopped by police who wanted to warn him about his speed and ended up losing his licence for a year.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that 18-year-old Aiden Rabbeth, of Murray Road, Inverness was in Culloden Road on October 14, 2022 when he was intercepted by police.

Fiscal depute Emily Hood said: "Police stopped him to give him a warning about his speed but due to his presentation they decided to breath test him."

Rabbeth admitted driving with almost twice the legal alcohol limit. His reading was 41mcgs when the maximum is 22mcgs.

Defence solicitor Josie Donachie told Sheriff Sara Matheson: "He had two beers with his dinner and drove five hours later. He was a bit naive."

Fining Rabbeth £390 and disqualifying him for a year, the sheriff certified him as suitable for a drink-drive rehabilitation course which will earn him a three-month discount if he successfully completes the self-funded programme.
