THE end appears in sight at last for unsightly scaffolding that has blighted Inverness city centre for most of the past decade.

Work to demolish the interior of the fire-ravaged former Eastgate Hostel building that began in March – six years on from the April 2013 blaze – is set to be completed early next month.

Although the original plan had been to dismantle the frontage stone by stone and mark blocks for reuse in a rebuild, the facade will now be retained after studies revealed additional support could be installed on the interior to keep it erect.

Work is expected to be completed by June 6 – to the relief of traders and businesses who praised the Inverness Courier for keeping up the pressure for action.
