ACTRESS Karen Gillan has joined the ranks of a major Oscar winner after being honoured with a coveted rising star award at an international film festival.

The Invernessian, who most recently starred in the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, will be handed the gong at the Maui Film Festival later this month.

Brie Larson, who won the best actress Oscar last year, and fellow actors Garrett Hedlund and Scott Eastwood are among the big names to have previously won the same award.

She will receive the accolade at the festival in Hawaii on June 24.

It will not be the actress’s first visit to the Pacific islands, having previously filmed upcoming blockbuster sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in the US state.

Ms Gillan’s award comes months after she was named a Scottish cultural legend by Tennent’s lager.

Her Golden Can Award saw her join the likes of Irvine Welsh, Biffy Clyro and Franz Ferdinand as a winner of the accolade. The hand-crafted award acknowledges those who have had an outstanding impact on Scottish life and culture.

Her awards come amid a busy year for Ms Gillan. As well as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji sequels, she has also been spotted filming the next Avengers movie, which will see her Guardians character Nebula rub shoulders with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk.

On top of her acting roles she also recently completed filming on her feature-length directing debut, The Party’s Just Beginning.
