More than 100 performers and businesses are set to be involved in this Saturday’s Nairn Christmas lights switch on.

The event, which will kick off at 10am with the lights being switched on at 4pm, will feature a street market, two craft fairs, street entertainment, live performances and more.

Countdown to Christmas will take place in the town centre and Nairn Community and Arts Centre.

The event is being organised for a third year by Nairn Connects BID with support from Inverness Farmers Market and volunteers from the community.

“We cannot wait for Saturday to come,” Nairn BID manager Lucy Harding said. “This event really is about community and bringing people together which is what Christmas is all about too.

“From 10am there will be entertainment from local bands and community groups in both the High Street and at the community centre. We are delighted to have Nairn Pipe Band involved and we also have a Santa’s Grotto running until 1pm in Nairn Library. Santa has had help with the gifts for this with donations from businesses in the town.”

During the day, more than 60 crafters and producers will be showcasing their products in the High Street and in Nairn Community and Arts Centre and there will be street entertainment including a clown, a fire performance, circus skills workshop, huskies and appearances from a naughty elf and Mrs Claus.

“The switching on of the lights takes place at 4pm and we have a Christmas decoration competition running for one lucky person to win the chance to switch them on,” Lucy said.

“Working with the Inverness Farmers Market, we have also encouraged businesses to get festive with prizes to be won. Judging is taking place this week by STV’s Nicola McAlley and the winner will be announced on Saturday.

“There’s a whole host of street theatre and entertainment for people to enjoy and we hope that they also take the time to have a browse of the stalls and our many, beautiful independent boutiques and shops.

“Many of the shops will have offers on as well, so look out for them. We have really tried to think of different ways to include people from the community to make it an event that everyone can enjoy and benefit from.”
