A female dolphin was found stranded in the Beauly Firth by a group out windsurfing

Jonnie Martin (48) and daughter Rosie (15), from Garguston on the Black Isle, were with friend Kenny Baker (54) on Sunday morning when they saw the dolphin close to shore.

“We approached to see if it was alive, and then carefully caught it by the tail and pulled it about 50 metres out into deeper waters,” Mr Martin said. “We followed it out and it seemed quite happy.”

Receding tides left the common dolphin stranded on the mudflats.

However, about an hour later, they spotted her stranded in the receding tide and called on the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) group for help.

They attended along with vets from the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) and the Coastguard. The dolphin was transported to North Kessock and successfully released at around 10.30pm.

Marine life specialists worked to prepare the dolphin for release close to North Kessock.

BDMLR volunteer Kirsty Macdonald said: “The dolphin would have been exhausted, but back in the water she was really keen to get going and was seen swimming off quite strongly and in the right direction.”
