An Inverness family have finally been rescued after a 10-week nightmare stranded thousands of miles from home.

Ian Simpson, his wife Engela and their two young children had been stuck in the Philippines since the middle of February after travelling out to visit family there.

Finally on Tuesday they managed to get seats on a repatriation flight from the capital Manila to Heathrow.

They missed an earlier flight as there were no connections running from their Butuan City base to Manila.

After landing back in the UK, Mr Simpson said: "Thankfully we made it back home.

"It was somewhat eventful but ultimately we and all the other citizens combined to almost entirely fill the Heathrow flight.

"We are delighted and consider ourselves very fortunate."

He thanked the Inverness Courier for helping to keep friends and relatives informed of their plight as well as Inverness MP Drew Hendry for his help during their ordeal.
