A SOMBRE but uplifting service was held to commemorate two men who were killed 51 years ago while on police duty.

A crowd of 40 people gathered in Tomnahurich Cemetery yesterday in pouring rain to remember the deaths of constable Ian Ritchie and detective sergeant Evan Lumsden.

The officers were killed while searching the canal basin in Fort William for a missing man in 1968.

A short memorial was also made to special constable Andrew Perrie who died following an incident in 1944 in Inverness town centre.

Organiser and former sergeant Dave Conner said he was pleased with the number of people who braved the weather to come and commemorate the deaths of the officers.

Mr Conner, who is the secretary for the Retired Police Officers Association, said: “Members of Mr Lumsden’s family were joined by the divisional commander, police officers, retired officers, Highland councillors and members of the public.

“I also had a message of support from Mr Perrie’s granddaughter who lives in America. We should never forget these men.”
