Community councillors have been reassured of the safety of an energy storage facility for wind and solar power on the outskirts of Nairn.

Responding to questions from members of Nairn River Community Council, planning director Dan Grierson of the Energy Workshop said the facility at Househill would be screened by a security fence and trees.

“There will be 24-hour CCTV coverage,” he said.

“Anyone breaching security would be immediately spotted and if the system felt it was being tampered with, it would immediately shut down.”

The batteries will be housed in up to 50 steel containers and Mr Grierson said they would be connected by an underground line to the electrical substation on the Grigorhill industrial estate.

Mr Grierson said the facility could store up to 50 megawatts of power and each unit would have a life of about 15 years but they could be reused in “less demanding roles”.

He said a temporary access would be created for road safety during construction of the site and delivery of the units.

It would take about nine months to construct and a community benefit fund of £5000 per year would be established for a period of 30 years.
