Extinction Rebellion staged a protest outside Highland Council headquarters, placing the local authority on “Santa’s naughty list” for what it sees as a lack of real progress after it declared a climate and ecological emergency in 2019.

Activists performed a Christmas-themed protest as members arrived for the council’s last full meeting of the year, accusing it of having made little progress on going carbon neutral.

The Christmas theme appears to have been chosen deliberately to illustrate that Santa’s North Pole base “is melting, and global temperatures are still rising.”

Gary Jack from XR Highlands & Islands and Moray said: “Highland Council’s commitment to the Climate and Ecological Emergency is as real as Santa is. It is easy enough to declare a Climate and Ecological Emergency, as Highland Council did in May 2019, but unfortunately acting like it is one is something totally different as they have proven over the last three and a half years.

“Let us not end up like the UK government, who are now embarking on a route of increasing CO2 emissions with new North Sea oil and gas projects and possibly even a coal mine. Highland Council has a lot to do to get back on track to achieve their 2019 declaration and pledge.”
