Landscapes and nature are at the heart of a new photographic exhibition being staged by a forestry student in Inverness.

Eye-catching images of the Highlands captured by Gavin Shand are currently showing at the community gallery in the city’s Eastgate Shopping Centre.

Although he is currently studying forestry, he continues his passion for landscape and nature photography which has seen him involved in a range of projects around the UK as well as Mexico.

Mr Shand grew up in the small Aberdeenshire town of Ordiquhill where he discovered his love for exploring the great outdoors and discovering wildlife.

It was his same love for the outdoors which led him to discover his passion for landscape and nature photography.

“Through photography, I am able to show the processes and environments that form Scottish landscapes and illustrates the feeling I get when exploring Scotland’s wild places,” he

said.

Before moving to Inverness, he had previously worked in wildlife filmmaking for several years and he found himself in places such as Bristol and Glasgow.

He also spent eight months in Mexico on various projects and expeditions including working with communities to create online content to promote ecotourism.

In 2020, he was among the winners in the annual Scottish Nature Photography Awards with his black and white image, Ancient Ridges, taken at Bla Bheinn on Skye.

Mr Shand said: “I’m looking forward to spending more time out with my camera on the hills and in the forests.”

His exhibition is running throughout April.

The shopping centre’s community gallery gives local schools, community groups, artists, and photographers the opportunity to showcase their visual art at a prime city centre location for free.
