ENGINEERS have been working to "urgently fix" a section of the gas network in Inverness after a suspected leak was reported.

Gas company SGN has deployed engineers to the Crown Road area of Inverness on a section of the route close to the an entrance to the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

The issue was flagged by HIghland Council on Tuesday when it notified the public of a road closure "due to gas leak requiring immediate attention". It said then that a contractor needed to close one lane with traffic being controlled using temporary two-way traffic lights.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area "as traffic queues/build-ups are likely".

Work has been continuing then with a significant area of excavation carried out on the road.

SGN looks after the gas network. Company spokesman Dan Brown said "Our engineers are working to urgently fix our gas network in the Crown Road area of Inverness.

"We’ve been working close to the entrance of Eastgate Shopping Centre car park since Tuesday, December 6.

"We’re working through the night to get these essential repairs completed as quickly and safely as possible. It’s expected that we’ll complete our work and clear site by tomorrow evening (Friday, December 9 )."
