DOUBTS hang over the future of a city institution following online rumours the Castle Restaurant might be about to close.

No-one at the restaurant, which has been serving hearty meals to Invernessians and visitors since the 1950s, would officially comment on claims made in a private forum on Facebook that it might be closing – possibly to become a fish and chip shop.

However, they also did not deny the rumours when contacted by the Inverness Courier yesterday.

The restaurant was bought by Skye brother and sister Katie and Ewen MacKinnon in 2015, from previous owners Brian and Christine Lipton.

It was placed on the market last December and remains advertised with an asking price of more than £325,000.

Inverness Central councillor Bet McAllister was unaware of the speculation about the restaurant’s future but said if it did close, it would be the end of an era.

“I think a lot of people would be sad if they heard it was closing,” she said.
