A number of elective operations at Raigmore Hospital have been cancelled due to an overwhelming demand for beds.

NHS Highland said it had to make the difficult decision to reschedule the procedures to ease pressure on staff due to an increase in hospital admissions.

An NHS spokeswoman said: “Similar to other health boards across Scotland, NHS Highland has seen a significant increase in the number of unwell patients having to be admitted to its hospitals in recent weeks.

“To ensure we can meet the demand for our emergency admissions, some elective operations have had to be cancelled. This is not a decision that is taken lightly and every effort will be made to reschedule these as soon as possible.

“Operational managers are closely monitoring and support is being given to staff working in the wards.”
