A man was watching his granddaughter playing football from his car when he was struck from behind close to Bught Park in Inverness.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard the grandfather's vehicle was hit by Jools Grant (21) of the city's Springfield Gardens who had been behind the wheel of his grandmother's Nissan Micra at the time.

Grant had no insurance and no licence and also admitted a charge of careless driving at Springfield Gardens, Inverness on June 6 whereby he lost control of the car and caused it to collide with another vehicle.

Grant is currently serving a custodial sentence for another matter, with his earliest release date being November 22.

Depute fiscal Niall Macdonald said the incident happened at 8pm.

He said Grant came round a corner at speed, lost control and went into the back of the parked car whose 69 year-old driver was sitting watching his granddaughter playing football.

"The force of the collision was such he banged his head on the interior of the vehicle," he said.

"After impact the accused shouted: 'Are you OK mate?'.

"The complainer was in a state of shock and members of the public came to his assistance, one with medical experience. Meanwhile the accused left and the police were contacted."

Grant was later traced to Springfield Gardens where the Nissan Micra was found to have a damaged bumper.

The 69-year-old was taken to Raigmore Hospital where he was found to have reddening to an injury on his head.

He was also suffering from high blood pressure.

Solicitor Clare Russell said the car belonged to Grant's grandmother and Grant was at a loss to explain his conduct.

Sheriff Gary Aitken imposed fines totalling £1665 with no time to pay so the alternative of 45 days in prison was applied.

He also banned Grant from driving for 16 months.
