World famous landmark Eilean Donan Castle closes doors to visitors amid 'escalating coronavirus situation'; the move at the Lochalsh attraction comes as cases of Covid-19 in the Highlands rise to five, and Scottish cases increase to 195

ONE of the Highlands’ most world famous sites has closed to all visitors with immediate effect as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Eilean Donan Castle has confirmed that it will shut “indefinitely and with immediate effect” amid wider efforts to tackle the global spread of Covid-19.

Confirming the news shortly before 4.30pm, a spokesman said: “In an effort to protect our staff and the wider public, please note that due to the escalating coronavirus situation, Eilean Donan Castle will now be closed indefinitely and with immediate effect.”

The announcement came as the number of confirmed Highland cases of the illness rose to five, and the number of Scottish cases increased to 195.
