EDUCATE ME: University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) explains its new logo

UHI has taken to social media to explain its new logo after receiving feedback of disappointment.

The region's university changed its logo earlier this week.

Its logo has changed from the University of the Highlands and Islands – along with a Gaelic translation – and mountain and waterway in purple and white to a simple black and white UHI with an embedded plus sign to symbolise “more”.

The university partnership of 10 colleges is looking to strengthen engagement with communities and market its offerings more effectively through a “connected and recognisable brand family” 10 years after establishing university status.

A UHI spokesman said: "We had a proliferation of colours across the partnership and the monotone style works best to unify all partners as one family brand. The plus sign uses the ‘negative’ space within the black and white palette to emphasise the ‘more’. The plus sign is to aid the concept of ‘where learning means more’. Colour will be used sparingly as a highlighter only with photography bringing in the vibrancy of our place, people and subjects."

Meanwhile, Perth College UHI rejected a name change.

A spokesman for Perth College UHI stated: "We are not currently adopting the new visual identity to reflect Perth College UHI because we wished to retain the word college in our title. We are working closely with UHI colleagues to ensure we benefit from UHI repositioning and messaging, while continuing to engage our college relationships."

When asked if UHI Perth College would have worked, he stated: "There are parameters within the new branding meaning this wasn’t an option."
