Inverness Sheriff Court heard a thief stole money from a flat after realising he was in the wrong place.

Scott Burns (27) of Diriebught Road, Inverness, entered the flat in the city's Academy Street on January 4.

He realised his mistake but went into a bedroom where he found £100 in £20 notes, which he stole.

He was arrested shortly afterwards, in nearby Union Street, as the flat’s owner had seen Burns in the hallway and reported the matter to the police.

Defence solicitor Michael Chapman said Burns had consumed too much alcohol and was confused when he entered the flat, though he continued to look around even after realising his mistake.

He said he had found the cash too tempting not to take.

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald sentenced Burns to 10 weeks imprisonment.

He had been on remand since the date of the offence.
