A man has been spared jail despite attacking a garage worker with a metal bar.

William Stewart (56) turned up unannounced on October 11 this year at the Lewiston Garage in Drumnadrochit and shouting at his victim "you're a paedophile".

He then struck the man with a metal bar, with his victim hitting his head off machinery he had been standing near, Inverness Sheriff Court was told.

The bloodied victim was found by another employee who overheard the commotion.

By this point Stewart, of St Drostans, Drumnadrochit, had left the property and was traced by police around an hour later at home just before 3.30pm.

He was taken to Burnett Road police station in Inverness where he was found to be in possession of two class A drugs.

Fiscal depute Emma MacEwan said he was discovered to have 0.3 grams of heroin and 0.2 grams of cocaine on his person.

The victim was taken to hospital and required six stitches to his head.

Sheriff Sara Matheson imposed a community payback order as a direct alternative to custody.

Stewart is to be under the supervision of social workers for 12 months and will have to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the community.
