A PRISONER has been remanded for possession of cocaine with a potential value of more than £11,000.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard Michael Leckie (28), currently a prisoner at HMP Porterfield, had been staying with a friend in the city’s Glendoe Terrace on March 21, 2016 when police carried out a raid on the property.

Depute Fiscal Alison Young told Sheriff Margaret Neilson that the house had been unoccupied at the time police arrived, so they had to force entry.

The raid took place at 12.55am and a bag of white powder was recovered from behind a sofa cushion within the property.

A set of scales and plastic bags were also found in the property.

Mrs Young said that when he was interviewed by police officers Leckie admitted to them that he had a serious drug addiction problem.

“His position is he was visiting his friend and brought the bag with him and the tenant of the property had no knowledge of this,” she said.

“He stated he was in financial difficulties and owed thousands of pounds.”

The fiscal said the tenant of the property denied seeing any drugs in the house.

Mrs Young said the powder was a mix of cocaine and benzocaine, weighed 118.5 grammes and had a potential value of £11,800.

Sheriff Neilson said she would need to defer the matter for background reports and remanded Leckie in custody.

He will re-appear in court for sentencing on August 19.
