A 22-year-old Bonawe man who turned to alcohol and drugs to cope with the death of his grandfather dealt Class A narcotics to fund his growing habit.

But when police on mobile patrol in the Hilton area of Inverness saw a BMW and decided to stop it for a routine check, first offender Douglas Haggart was caught.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that Haggart, of Kenmore Cottages, Bonawe, Oban was searched and officers found cocaine and heroin with a total street value of £5780 in his possession.

Also recovered on October 16, 2019 was £451.60 in cash, Sheriff Robert Frazer was told.

Haggart admitted two charges of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and sentence had previously been deferred for a background report.

Defence solicitor Willie Young told Sheriff Sara Matheson, who sentenced Haggart to six months in jail, that his client was currently remanded in custody on similar drugs-related matters.

He added: "He had moved to Inverness temporarily and while he had dabbled with drugs, his involvement spiralled due to emotional difficulties. This followed the death of his grandfather.

"The offences were an attempt to fund the significant habit he had at that time.

"He is ashamed at how he let his life develop and has attended addiction support groups while on remand."
