A man tried to drive away from police in Inverness but the car was in neutral and he was arrested.

Kurt Bennett (26) of Harris Road, Aberdeen, admitted obstructing police by attempting to drive away when they tried to speak to him in Craigton Avenue, Inverness on June 20, 2018 while he was in the driver's seat of his parked vehicle.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard he put his foot on the accelerator but the car was in neutral and did not move.

The court also heard details of an earlier incident where Bennett sped up behind other vehicles on the A96 between Elgin and Inverness on June 6, 2018 and overtook when it was unsafe to do so.

He admitted a charge of dangerous driving.

Depute fiscal Fiona Murray said that one oncoming driver had been forced on to a verge to avoid a collision as a result of Bennett's actions.

Bennett also admitted failing to appear for a court hearing on October 1 last year.

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald placed him on supervision for one year and banned him from driving for 18 months.

He was also ordered to carry out 215 hours of unpaid work for the community.
