A drink-driver was on his way to visit his mother when he was stopped by police at the Longman Roundabout in Inverness.

John Williams (53) was on his way from Mansfield to Alness on September 18.

Tests showed he was driving with 127mcgs of alcohol per 100mls of breath in his system.

The legal limit is 22mcgs.

Defence solicitor Clare Russell said at Inverness Sheriff Court that Williams was going through a difficult period in his life at the time of the offence and appeared as a first offender.

She said he was embarrassed about the offence.

The court heard he had been using alcohol as a coping mechanism after his marriage broke down and he lost his job.

Social workers regarded him as being at low risk of re-offending.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson banned Williams from driving for two years and placed him on a community payback order with a requirement to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

He will be under social work supervision for one year.
