He was breathalysed by police called to a disturbance at the Co-op in Drumnadrochit.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard officers found Robert Cairns (56) of Balmacaan Road, Drumnadrochit, in his vehicle in the car park on May 16 last year.

He admitted driving his vehicle with 120mcg of alcohol in his system, when the limit is 22mcg.

Sheriff Sara Matheson ordered Cairns to carry out 90 hours unpaid work and disqualified him from driving for 32 months.

She said: “This is an extremely high reading. You could have killed yourself or someone else.”

Solicitor Ken Ferguson said his client had sought help for his alcohol problem and had “overcome his issues.”

The sheriff certified Cairns as suitable for a drink-driver rehabilitation scheme which he must fund himself.

He will earn a six month discount from the ban if he successfully completes it.
