DREW HENDRY: Unsung Christmas heroes remind us of compassion and kindness
Our frontline and emergency service workers deserve our deepest gratitude. They’ve been on the frontlines throughout the year, and Christmas is no exception.
Whether it’s the dedicated healthcare professionals and support staff working long hours in the NHS, those in the social care service looking after some of our most vulnerable neighbours, or emergency workers in the police, fire, and other vital services keeping us safe, they all deserve our heartfelt “thank you” for their unwavering commitment to serving our community.
Let’s not forget our military personnel, some of whom are far from home and their own families this Christmas.
They sacrifice time with their families to protect ours and others around the world, demonstrating unwavering dedication, often in challenging and distant locations, so that we can enjoy the peace and freedom we hold dear. To them and their families, our heartfelt gratitude.
Then there are the volunteers who epitomise the true spirit of our community.
These unsung heroes generously give their time and energy to ensure that those who have the least are not forgotten, not just during the festive period but all year round.
Whether they are volunteering at a food bank, cooking Christmas dinners for those who would otherwise have nowhere else to go, or simply offering a friendly voice on the phone and providing comfort and companionship when loneliness is felt most keenly, we owe them our thanks.
In a year that has brought many challenges and difficulties, these unsung heroes continue to remind us of what it means to come together as a community. They remind us that compassion and kindness can shine even brighter in the face of adversity.
As we gather around and enjoy the festivities, let’s remember and appreciate these exceptional individuals who work tirelessly to protect others, often without any recognition.
So, to all our key workers, military personnel, and dedicated volunteers, thank you for your service, dedication, and selflessness.
And to everyone else, whether you celebrate Christmas or plan to enjoy a few peaceful days off as the world slows down, I send my warmest wishes to you and your families and a Happy New Year to all when it comes.
