Struggling pensioners could be in line for extra support.

Last week I was pleased to add my support to my colleague MP Anne McLaughlin’s campaign encouraging sign up for those eligible for pension credit to receive help towards their rising energy bills with a payment of £324.

According to recent statistics, around 40 per cent of people entitled to pension credit don’t apply for it. This is a worrying trend, as it can provide a much-needed financial boost.

Pension credit is a benefit offered by the government to help low-income pensioners meet their basic needs, such as food, housing, and heating. It is means-tested, which means that only those who are eligible can apply. The eligibility criteria vary depending on your age, income, savings, and other factors, but generally speaking, if you are a single pensioner and your weekly income is less than £182.60, or you are a couple and your combined income is less than £278.70, you may be eligible for pension credit.

There are several reasons why some people who are entitled to pension credit don’t apply for it. Some may not be aware of their eligibility or the availability of the benefit. Others may not know how to apply or may find the application process too complicated or intimidating. Still others may be reluctant to disclose their financial information or may feel embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help.

Whatever the reasons, it is important to remember that pension credit is not a charity or a handout, but a recognition of the contributions and sacrifices that pensioners have made throughout their working lives. By applying for pension credit, you are not only helping yourself, but also supporting the pension system and the broader economy.

If you apply for pension credit, you may also be able to get help towards your rising energy bills. This can make a big difference in keeping your home warm and comfortable during the cold winter months. Particularly for those who live here in the Highlands where we already experience some of the highest levels of fuel poverty and the coldest temperatures throughout the UK in the winter months.

So, don’t miss out on this opportunity. If you think you may be eligible for pension credit, don’t hesitate to contact your local Jobcentre Plus office or visit the government’s website for more information and to apply online. It’s quick, easy, and confidential, and it could make a big difference in your life.
