Fans of Shrek are to get the chance to live just like their cantankerous movie hero at a fantasy rural retreat in the Highlands.

A real life reconstruction of the green ogre’s fairytale swamp hideaway is to open for bookings on an Inverness-shire estate for a short time only.

From Tuesday, the Airbnb listing will invite people to spend two nights in the beautifully recreated and intricately-detailed “mud-laden” and “moss-covered” den.

Shrek is known as an anti-social and highly-territorial giant who loves the solitude of his swamp.

But the exclusive two-night stay at the premises will enable up to three guests to socialise and enjoy the surroundings from Friday, October 27 to Sunday, October 29.

Located in the grounds of Ardverikie Estate, where TV show Monarch of the Glen was filmed, the fairytale stay also has a magical price tag - it will cost nothing.

Decorated with classic Shrek props and signs, one downside is that the ogre’s bathroom sits 20 metres from the hideaway’s front door.

It is hosted by Shrek’s best pal Donkey, which the booking site describes as “swamp-sitting” for his fellow DreamWorks Animation’s co-star.

“Shrek’s Swamp is lovely,” Donkey writes, “Just beautiful. The perfect place to entertain guests.

“You know what I like about it? Everything. The overgrown landscaping, the modest interiors, the nice boulders, all of it.

“I can’t wait for guests to experience this muddy slice of paradise for themselves.”

To celebrate the launch, Airbnb will make a donation to the HopScotch Children’s Charity, which provides some of Scotland’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children with respite breaks through nurturing and dynamic holiday trips.

Those interested should request to book the listing and wait for an email to confirm whether they have been accepted.

Bookings open on October 13 at 6pm.

Finalists must make their own way to and from the location.

A spokesperson for Airbnb said: “The host is expecting this listing to be very popular, so to ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to book, guests must request to book the one-time stay.

“Please do note that this exclusive two-night stay is not a contest.”
