The man had been previously banned from the road for eight years.

Ian Stewart (36), of Drumossie Road, Inverness, had been convicted after trial last month of driving while disqualified.

The court heard he was recognised by police behind the wheel in Longman Road on May 6, 2020.

He was also convicted of associated charges of driving without insurance and breaching an undertaking not to drive.

He had claimed he was only a passenger in the grey BMW.

Stewart also appeared for sentence after admitting possessing a knife in the boot of his car on May 3, 2020. He told police: “It’s mine. It’s for my work.”

Defence solicitor Cecily Kingston asked Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood not to jail her client: “He should have left the knife at home that day.

“Because of his record, he understands he is flying close to the wind and he is willing to temper a restriction of liberty order. But he is on a good route now. He is living with his partner and it seems he has turned a corner.”

Sheriff Fleetwood said: “With some hesitation due to your persistent road traffic offending, I will deal with this by a community payback order.”

He was banned anew from driving for five years and also ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.
