'Difficult' driving conditions across Highlands as council gritters hit sprawling road network

DIFFICULT driving conditions have been flagged across Highland Council's sprawling roads' network this morning with up to six inches of snow recorded in the Inverness area.

Road condition reports for Tuesday:

Inverness: Four to six inches of snow cover on roads, gritters out blading and treating all routes. Snow still falling.

Ross and Cromarty East: Up to three inches of fresh snow through the night along with negative temperatures this morning will make for difficult driving conditions today. All routes being treated. Caution advised.

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh: Three to four inches across the network this morning. The priority routes are still being worked on. Some secondary routes have been started in Lochalsh and Gairloch areas. Treatment is ongoing. No reported overnight issues.

Lochaber: Low road surface temperatures overnight with up to three inches of snow in some areas and continuing to snow as routes being treated this morning especially in the most westerly areas. All routes being treated by priority. No issues reported overnight.

Caithness: One to three inches of snow on all routes. Being gritted and bladed.Treatment ongoing on roads and footpaths.No overnight issues reported

Badenoch and Strathspey: South end of the area wet with frost patches and north end about 2cm of snow fell overnight. All routes being treated with priority given to Primary and Secondary routes.

Nairn: Snow fall of about three to four inches throughout the area. All routes to be treated and bladed with priority given to Primary and Secondary Routes. No known overnight issues.

Sutherland: Fresh snow cover on all routes with up to five to six inches on the higher routes. All priority routes treated to council policy. Secondary routes treated as resources permit. No known overnight issues.

Skye and Raasay: Approx two inches of fresh snow covering overnight. Treatment ongoing on Primary/Secondary Routes (as available resources permit).

Highland Council says: "The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time.

"It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling."

A large number of schools are closed this morning due to adverse weather.

The school closures page on the Council’s website at: https://www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures is updated from 7am and cleared each evening by 6pm.
