Springfield Properties has said it will appeal a Highland Council decision to refused planning permission for 93 new homes in Drumnadrochit.

On Wednesday the council’s south planning applications committee rejected the plan despite officials recommending they be approved.

A government reporter will now examine the application.

Springfield north managing director, Dave Main, said: “We are disappointed with the Highland Councils’ decision to refuse our plans to build 93 new homes off Kilmore Road in Drumnadrochit – particularly as the application was recommended for approval by planning officials.

“Our application will bring great quality homes – including 24 much needed affordable homes – to the area.

“We will be appealing this decision with the Scottish Government.”

The application drew 13 objections from locals and Glenurquhart Community Council and was criticised by council leader Margaret Davidson for contravening the Inner Moray Firth Local Development Plan and the Highland-wide development plan.

She said: “The development does not conform to the character of Drumnadrochit village, due to the density, layout and individual design.”

In its objection the community council raised concerns about over-development and the risks to flooding, suggesting it would be more appropriate to develop the site after a flood alleviation scheme is completed.
