The lifesaving equipment has been fitted outside St Columba’s Church to be used by the congregation and general public.

If needed, people can call 999 and give the location of the defibrillator – the call handler will then give a four-digit code to unlock the equipment so casualties can hopefully be saved.

It was welcome news to members of the church who have been trying to get one since before the Covid pandemic began.

The church’s Father Domenico Zanré said: “We have this new defibrillator thanks to the generosity of benefactors. It is there to serve the parish community but also the wider community in Smithon, Culloden and beyond.

“The church exists to provide that message of salvation to all people, but obviously the defibrillator is there to save lives as well. We are so delighted to have it, but will be equally delighted if we never have to use it.

“It’s in a very prominent position so people can see it and is easily accessible in case of an emergency and should be hooked up to an app so people can find out its location. It’s a way of providing for ourselves as a community and also for the wider community.”
