Councillors have decided to put a Nairn workshop up for lease.

Members of Highland Council’s Nairnshire area committee considered a report yesterday.

It concerned the Grant Street workshop, store and yard, in Fishertown, and there were four options – including selling the site.

Councillors were asked to note the outcome of a recent consultation process and consider whether to agree with the proposal or amend it to include the marketing of the property for lease instead of sale.

The site was located on Common Good land and Nairn provost, councillor Laurie Fraser, said his preferred option would be to lease the site and there was a shortage of small yards in the town – he feared that, if it was sold, it could be lost if it was redeveloped.

Committee chairman, councillor Michael Green, felt leasing it represented "sound business practice".

Councillor Barbara Jarvie said leasing the site would protect the community asset and added: "I don't think the full potential has been displayed."

And councillor Paul Oldham said he had been in favour of selling the site but added: "But I am persuaded by what you have got to say. I would go with that."
