A much-loved lollipop man who served an Inverness city centre primary school for many years has passed away.

Billy MacDougall, who was 85, died “suddenly and unexpectedly” at home on April 15.

The retired distillery worker served as a road crossing patroller on Tomnahurich Street near Central Primary School until a period of ill health several years ago.

He quickly became popular among pupils and parents alike for his sense of humour, fun and mischief, as well as his caring approach to duties.

Ailsa Fraser, head teacher of Central Primary, was saddened to learn of Mr MacDougall’s death.

She said: “Billy was a lovely man and a great character. We really missed him when he retired about three years ago.

“We were saddened to hear about his recent passing. He served the Central School community for a number of years and was so well-loved and respected.

“Billy loved his job and was always happy to chat with the children and their families. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Mr MacDougall, of Bruce Gardens, was a member of Planefield Bowling Club on Planefield Road.

He was husband to Fiona, loving dad of Gary, Scott and Julie and father-in-law to Sharon, Morag and Sean.

He was also a proud grandad to Nicola, Alex, Daniel and the late Louisa, and great-grandad to Leah.

Such was his popularity, Mr MacDougall’s death drew a huge response on social media.

Karen Urquhart said: “So sad to be reading this, such a lovely lollipop man. Always cheery. Thinking of his family at this sad time.”

Car Mackenzie said: “A lovely man who always had time to chat to school kids and parents. Deepest sympathy. He was always happy and smiling and fantastic at his job.”

And Nellie McClurg added: “So sorry to be reading this. Billy was such a lovely man and always had time to speak to you. Sincere condolences to you all at this very sad time.”

Mr MacDougall’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 2 at 1pm, in Dalneigh Church; thereafter to Inverness Crematorium.

The family has requested there to be no flowers, but donations are invited in memory of Billy towards Alzheimer Scotland, at the door or on www.chisholmfunerals.co.uk
