THE death of a baby in Inverness is being treated as “suspicious”, police have confirmed.

Three-week-old Mikayla Haining, from Mackay Road in Hilton, was taken to Raigmore Hospital but died on June 8.

Police initially treated her death as “unexplained” and used specialist and forensic officers while they investigated the incident.

The force also maintained a presence in the Hilton area as officers carried out enquiries.

But, making a statement today, Detective Inspector Brian Geddes confirmed that the investigation had now entered a new phase.

The investigation’s leading officer, said: “Following extensive enquiries, we can now confirm that the circumstances surrounding Mikayla Haining’s death are suspicious.

“Our investigation remains ongoing at this time, as we work towards establishing the full set of circumstances that led to Mikayla’s death, and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference NN/14025/17 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.
